Remaking the Wild Episode One - Haweswater Reservoir

Remaking the Wild

Haweswater Reservoir

Haweswater Reservoir in the Lake District, Cumbria is a large landscape scale project managed in partnership between the RSPB and United Utilities. The area has not only provided generations of enjoyment for those who admire the local wildlife, climb the fells and make memories here, but is vital for the millions of people that drink its water. Protecting and improving the water quality is a key part of why the land is being managed.

The RSPB have been working on this site since 1969. At the start, their main focus was to protect Golden Eagles in the area and keep their habitats safe. However over time, their relationship developed with United Utilities, which has culminated in them taking on the tenancy of two farms in neighbouring valleys. Their focus here now is all about making the landscape a better filter for water.

The methods being implemented at Haweswater Reservoir are not the only solutions available but they present a fantastic example of how landscapes can work better for people, for animals and the planet.
